Laura lived a full life that seemed simply perfect from the outside. She had a beloved daughter, Sarah, a bright and ambitious young woman preparing to apply to a prestigious university in the capital. Laura’s husband, Kevin, was always caring and devoted, though often away on business trips. But each time he returned home, he surrounded his wife with special warmth and attention.
Kevin was on another business trip now. Laura had grown accustomed to these temporary separations, understanding they were part of their family life. Their home was in a small rural town where educational opportunities were limited.
There was only one community college, which didn’t suit Sarah at all, as she dreamed of the big city and the opportunities the capital would offer. As a mother, Laura naturally wanted her daughter close by, but she understood and supported Sarah’s desire for a quality education. It had been months since Kevin left for work.
At first, they communicated regularly—texts, calls, and rare but meaningful conversations. Over time, however, contact became less frequent. Laura began to feel a growing unease in her heart.
Memories of closeness with her husband started to fade. Her worry only grew after Sarah left for the capital. Now alone, Laura sank deeper into loneliness, desperately waiting for even a small message from her husband.
Time marched on. The winter chill gradually filled the air with the anticipation of the holidays, and Laura was preparing for Christmas. Sarah planned to come home for the break to spend those long-awaited days with her mother.
But before the festive days arrived, an unexpected visit changed everything. The doorbell rang, and the mail carrier handed Laura a letter. With hope in her eyes, she opened the envelope, expecting to finally hear from Kevin.
Instead, the letter’s words hit her like a cold shock. Kevin wrote briefly, without emotion, that he had met another woman. She was the one with whom he was truly happy.
Laura’s world collapsed in an instant. When Sarah returned home for the holidays, she found her mother in a state of shock and despair. Laura tried to hide her feelings, fearing she’d ruin the joyful holiday atmosphere.
