The director was surprisingly warm, even greeting him with a handshake. “Dr. Carter, your hospital is facing staff changes. Dr. Bennett has lost our trust. He’s under criminal investigation. We propose you as chief physician, based on your colleagues’ glowing reviews.”
The turn of events stunned James. “Can I still operate?” he asked, the question paramount.
“Your call. If you can manage both, go for it,” the director smiled approvingly. James could barely keep from speeding. Excitement to reform his hospital pushed the gas pedal.
He couldn’t wait to share the news with his loved ones. The gray city high-rises gave way to colorful suburban rooftops. Weekends were now spent at Marina’s.
Lily squealed and leapt onto him at the door. “Daddy’s here!” Hannah approached, smiling, and hugged them both. In the kitchen, Marina and Tom skewered meat for grilling.
“Hey! We’ve been waiting!” Marina called. James, with Lily still on his shoulders, laughed and announced, “Meet the new chief physician of City Hospital Six!”
Everyone cheered. Tom roared with laughter. “You knew!” James exclaimed, catching his reaction.
“Of course!” Tom admitted. “We nailed your Dr. Bennett yesterday. His schemes will keep our units busy for a year.”
“Enough talk. It’s ready. Let’s hit the gazebo. I’ve got a toast,” Marina said.
James watched the joyful bustle with contentment. Hannah set the table, exchanging tender glances with her fiancé. Lily raced around, goofing off.
Tom and Marina grilled, teasing each other. The smoky aroma of the barbecue wrapped the group in anticipation of the feast. His heart was full and calm.
Happiness, it turned out, was having all your loved ones close. That was its secret. Seeing Dr. Grayson’s name on his ringing phone, James smiled.
After the call, he told his friends, “Nothing’s changed. A critical patient just came in. I’ve got to operate.”
In the car, a thought hit him. One more stroke to the picture of happiness: a job he loved.
