Dylan shot up out of his seat so violently that his heavy chair scraped loudly across the tile floor. He marched straight into the far corner of the cramped room and just stood there, his broad back turned to all of us, his shoulders shaking with silent, ragged sobs. I desperately wanted to cross the room to comfort him, to wrap my arms tightly around his waist, but I honestly didn’t know if I was even allowed to touch him anymore.
“What exactly happens now?” Robert asked, his usually booming voice sounding completely defeated and hollowed out.
“We will be officially filing criminal charges. Attempted endangerment and tampering. Caroline will need to voluntarily turn herself in to the precinct, or a judge will immediately issue a warrant for her arrest.”
“She literally just got discharged from the hospital yesterday morning,” Robert argued, his voice wavering with a desperate edge. “She is still physically weak.”
“She will be formally processed and, in all likelihood, released on bail, considering she isn’t a flight risk and has an impeccably clean record,” the detective replied coolly. “But Mr. Ashford, you need to fully grasp the gravity of this situation. Your wife could be facing serious prison time.”
The sheer weight of the word “prison” seemed to permanently shatter something deep inside Dylan. He let out a gut-wrenching sound—a jagged, broken noise that was half gasp, half sob—and pressed his forehead hard against the cool, painted cinderblock wall. I couldn’t bear to stand there and watch him fall apart anymore. I crossed the cramped room and reached out, gently pressing my hand against his trembling shoulder. “Dylan.”
He slowly turned his head to look at me, his gray eyes brimming with absolute, soul-crushing devastation. “You were right the whole time. She really did it. She actually tried to…” He couldn’t even force the rest of the horrific sentence past his lips. Instead, he just grabbed me, pulling me fiercely into his chest and holding onto me so tightly I could barely draw a breath.
“I am so incredibly sorry,” he whispered brokenly into my hair. “God, Lori, I am so completely sorry that I didn’t believe you.”
“It’s okay,” I murmured back, rubbing his back.
“No, it is absolutely not okay. My own mother tried to intentionally sedate you at our wedding, and I had the nerve to look you in the eye and accuse you of lying.”
I just held him tightly while he openly wept, feeling my own hot tears finally spilling over my lashes. It was a bizarre, overwhelming tidal wave of profound relief and shattering heartbreak, all violently mixed together until I couldn’t distinguish one emotion from the other. At some point during the breakdown, Robert had silently slipped out of the room. Andrew remained frozen at the conference table, just staring blankly down at his own folded hands, looking completely lost at sea.
“What am I supposed to do now?” Dylan asked me, his voice cracking painfully. “She’s my mother.”
He pulled back just enough to look at my face, a look of pure, unadulterated horror dawning in his eyes. “She actively tried to hurt you. She tried to permanently ruin our wedding… What on earth would have happened if you hadn’t caught her? What if you had actually swallowed that drink?”
“But I didn’t,” I reminded him gently. “I switched the crystal flutes. I am perfectly fine.”
“You could have easily been the one strapped to that hospital bed, completely humiliated in front of everyone we know, with viral videos of your breakdown plastered all over the internet. Every single person in that ballroom would have assumed you were black-out drunk or completely unhinged, and that digital footprint would have followed you for the rest of your life. It would have annihilated your teaching career, your pristine reputation, everything.”
I honestly hadn’t allowed my brain to travel down that dark, terrifying rabbit hole yet. But he was absolutely right. If I had simply toasted and consumed that tainted champagne, my entire life would have been systematically dismantled. Caroline had been fully prepared to completely destroy me, just to maintain a twisted grip on her adult son. The sudden surge of raw, blistering rage I felt right in that moment was unlike anything I had ever experienced in my life.
Caroline formally surrendered herself to the local precinct the very next morning. She arrived flanked by an astronomically expensive defense attorney named Gregory Huxley—a slick, polished shark in a tailored suit who looked like he billed a thousand dollars just to shake a client’s hand. I watched the surreal spectacle unfold live on the morning news.
Caroline was dressed impeccably in a highly conservative, tailored navy suit, her blowout flawless, her makeup perfectly understated. She strode confidently through the glass doors of the police station with her chin held high. She looked exactly like a wealthy socialite heading into an exclusive charity luncheon, not a criminal suspect turning herself in for a malicious tampering charge.
“Caroline Ashford, prominent local socialite and wealthy philanthropist, officially surrendered to authorities early this morning in connection with an alleged tampering incident at her own son’s lavish wedding reception,” the polished news anchor announced into the camera. “Inside sources claim Ashford allegedly slipped a heavy prescription sedative into her new daughter-in-law’s beverage, with the clear intent to cause public impairment or physical harm.”
They proceeded to loop the grainy, viral cell phone clips of Caroline violently tearing apart our expensive wedding cake. Then, in a sickening juxtaposition, they flashed our beautiful, professional engagement photo on the screen—Dylan and me, glowing and blissfully happy, with absolutely no clue of the hurricane heading our way. Dylan sat rigidly beside me on the couch, watching the brutal news coverage in dead silence. He had officially moved his suitcase back into my apartment two days ago, continuously apologizing for his initial doubt.
“They are already trying to spin it to make her look like the tragic victim,” I noted bitterly, watching the footage of Caroline delicately dabbing at her dry eyes with a tissue right before stepping inside the station.
“That is exactly what Huxley does for a living,” Dylan muttered, a harsh edge to his voice. “The man is a total shark. Dad went out and hired the absolute best defense attorney in the state.”
Of course he did. Wealth always provided a comfortable safety net. Caroline was officially processed, fingerprinted, and released on a fifty-thousand-dollar cash bail in under three hours. The strict conditions of her release included a mandated no-contact order with me, which was perfectly fine in my book. I never wanted to lay eyes on the woman again.
But the relentless media circus was only just warming up. My cell phone absolutely refused to stop ringing. Ambitious reporters had somehow tracked down my personal number, blowing it up at all hours demanding exclusive interviews. Camera crews started physically showing up at my elementary school, actively trying to corner my exhausted colleagues and the parents of my students for juicy soundbites. It didn’t take long before my principal officially called me into her office for a closed-door meeting.
“Lori,” Mrs. Henderson started, her expression a careful mixture of deep sympathy and professional anxiety. “I am going to officially suggest that you take a temporary leave of absence until this entire media storm completely blows over.”
“A leave of absence?” I stared at her, utterly stunned. “But I haven’t done a single thing wrong!”
“I know that, Lori. I truly do. But this aggressive media attention is severely disrupting the daily function of the school. We have news vans parked out by the playground, and concerned parents have been calling the front desk non-stop. It simply isn’t fair to you, and it certainly isn’t fair to the young students trying to learn.”
So, just like that, I was unceremoniously placed on paid administrative leave. I was essentially suspended from the career I absolutely adored, all because my vindictive mother-in-law had actively tried to sedate me. The sheer, staggering injustice of it all made me want to scream until my lungs gave out.
Meanwhile, Caroline’s high-priced lawyer was already masterfully manipulating the press. Huxley agreed to a prime-time interview on a major local news network. “My client is a fiercely devoted mother who has never been in an ounce of trouble with the law in her entire life,” Huxley stated smoothly into the camera. “She has dedicated decades to performing selfless charitable work, fiercely supporting her local community, and raising two incredibly wonderful sons. This entire, baseless accusation is built on grainy, highly ambiguous security footage that could be easily interpreted in a dozen different ways. And, of course, the testimony of a young woman who, frankly, may possess her own dark motivations for wanting to permanently damage Mrs. Ashford’s sterling reputation.”
“Are you actively suggesting that the daughter-in-law is lying to the police?” the eager reporter pressed.
“I am merely suggesting that there are many, many possible explanations for what transpired that tragic evening, and my client firmly deserves her constitutional presumption of innocence.”
I grabbed a throw pillow off the couch and violently hurled it at the television screen. Dylan managed to catch it right before it made impact. “Lori, he is just doing his job.”
“His incredibly well-paid job is to go on national television and make me look like a vindictive liar!”
“Lori, please…”
“No, Dylan! Your mother deliberately tried to sedate me. There is crystal-clear video evidence, undeniable toxicology reports, and her own sister actively confirmed the missing medication. And yet, this slick lawyer is allowed to go on TV and openly suggest I completely fabricated the entire ordeal for attention!”
“I know it’s infuriating. It isn’t fair at all. But unfortunately, this is exactly how the legal system operates.”
“Then the entire legal system is fundamentally broken!”
I knew, deep down, that I was furiously shouting at the completely wrong person. Dylan was absolutely not my enemy in this fight, but he was currently the only target I had any access to. He stepped forward and pulled my shaking body into his arms. I buried my face in his shoulder and finally cried hot, furiously angry tears.
“We are going to get through this nightmare,” he whispered fiercely, stroking my hair. “I promise you.” But standing there in my living room, watching my reputation be dragged through the mud on live television, I honestly wasn’t sure if I fully believed him.
