My heart was hammering a million miles an hour. I stepped directly in front of my father, completely unafraid of his towering height. My eyes were shining with a mix of defiance and raw emotion.
“Mom, look at his stomach,” I urged, pointing a shaking finger. “Look at the birthmark. We have the exact same mark. We’re exactly alike.”
My mother, her hands still trembling violently, slowly pulled back the frayed edge of Luke’s ruined shirt. Her breath hitched, catching painfully in her throat. There it was. A small, crescent-shaped shadow on his pale, dirt-streaked skin. It was an exact, flawless mirror of the mark I carried. She traced the air just above it, totally mesmerized, feeling a dizzying mixture of absolute euphoria and profound, crushing confusion.
“But how is this even possible?” she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the wind. She was talking to the universe, trying to make sense of a miracle that defied every medical record she had ever been shown.
Afonso entirely lost whatever thin thread of control he had left. His face contorted into a mask of pure, ugly rage. He lunged forward again, pointing a shaking finger at Luke.
“That kid is filthy!” he roared, the veins in his neck bulging against his expensive silk collar. “He is absolutely disgusting. How could a rat like this possibly be our son?”
That was the breaking point for me. The lingering fear that usually kept my mouth shut around my father completely evaporated, replaced by a white-hot surge of adrenaline. I stepped right up to him, tilting my chin up to meet his furious glare.
“You are the one who is filthy, sir,” I fired back, my voice ringing out clear and sharp across the driveway. “You are filthy for kissing Michelle behind Mom’s back!”
The entire world seemed to screech to a violent halt.
My mother froze, still kneeling on the cold concrete. The wind rustling through the garden trees suddenly sounded deafening. She turned her head slowly, looking at Afonso, then shifting her wide, devastated eyes to Michelle. Her mind, already overwhelmed by Luke’s miraculous appearance, simply couldn’t process this new, toxic information.
“What do you mean, Ashton?” she asked, her voice cracking, slipping into a terrifyingly fragile pitch. “What are you talking about, son?”
Afonso spun toward me, his eyes burning with cornered desperation. He took a threatening step in my direction, jabbing his finger through the air. “Shut your mouth right now, you insolent little brat!” he spat, his charming facade completely shattering into pieces. “Show some respect! I am your father!”
But I didn’t back down a single inch. I stood my ground, staring right into his panicking eyes.
“I saw it, Mom,” I said, my voice steady, though my hands were shaking at my sides. “I saw them kissing in the hallway. And then Dad grabbed my arm and threatened me. He told me never, ever to tell you. That’s exactly why I started distancing myself from him. That is why I never want to be around him.”
Penelope brought a trembling hand to her mouth. She looked like all the air had been violently sucked out of her lungs. The pristine, perfect life she had spent over a decade building was spinning wildly out of control, the foundation collapsing right beneath her feet.
Michelle, sensing the absolute disaster unfolding, scrambled to save herself. She forced a high-pitched, incredibly nervous laugh, waving her manicured hands defensively.
“This is completely preposterous!” she shrieked, her eyes darting nervously around the driveway. “The boy has an overactive imagination! Penelope, be reasonable. I am Afonso’s sister!”
But Hazel was already moving. My brilliant, fearless best friend stepped right into the center of the chaos, crossing her arms tightly across her chest.
“That is a complete lie,” Hazel announced, her voice dripping with absolute confidence. “Ashton and I did some digging a few weeks ago. We did our own research. You two do not even share the same last name.”
Michelle gasped, clutching the strap of her designer purse. “You little snoops—”
“We even snuck into the study and took pictures of your IDs,” Hazel continued smoothly, completely unfazed by the woman’s anger. “You think you’re so incredibly smart, but we are much smarter than you.”
Penelope’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. She stared blankly at the driveway, piecing the horrible puzzle together in real-time. “I’ve never actually seen her ID,” she murmured, the terrifying realization washing over her. She had just trusted his word. She had warmly welcomed a total stranger into her home.
I turned to Michelle, leaning into the confrontation with a sharp, mocking tone. “Go ahead. Pull your wallet out. Show us your ID right now and prove to my mother that you are really my father’s sister.”
Michelle was completely trapped. She looked frantically at Afonso, silently begging him to fix the mess, but Afonso was speechless, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He stammered, desperately trying to weave a new lie out of thin air, but Michelle completely cracked under the intense pressure.
“Fine! I’ll tell you everything!” she suddenly exploded, her shrill voice echoing off the high stone walls of the mansion. The panic had morphed into sheer, desperate greed. She looked wildly at my mother. “But only if you give me a very good amount of money, Penelope! Give me a huge payoff right now, and I will tell you everything you need to know. I’ll even tell you who this dirty kid you’re hugging really is. Pay me, and I will disappear forever.”
Afonso whipped around to face her, looking absolutely furious. “Shut your mouth, you total imbecile!” he screamed, lunging toward her.
Michelle, now completely consumed by panic and spite, backed away and shrieked right back at him. “You are the imbecile, Afonso! This is all your fault! If you hadn’t had the dreadful, sick idea of selling your own son, absolutely none of this would have happened!”
Silence fell over the driveway like a heavy, suffocating lead blanket.
Not a single bird chirped. Not a single car engine revved in the distance. The word hung suspended in the cold air, poisonous and devastating.
Selling.
Penelope stood perfectly paralyzed, the blood running completely cold in her veins. Her heart seemed to stop beating entirely for a long, agonizing moment. She slowly pushed herself up from the concrete, keeping one protective arm wrapped securely around Luke’s shaking shoulders.
“Sell… his own son?” she repeated, choking on the words. Each syllable weighed a thousand pounds.
Afonso backed up a step, looking wildly between Michelle, my mother, and Theodore. His eyes darted around like a trapped rat desperately looking for an escape route.
Penelope’s sadness instantly vanished, replaced by a cold, terrifying fury. Without breaking eye contact with Michelle, my mother reached up to her neck. With a swift, sharp tug, she unclasped a heavy, dazzling diamond necklace—a piece worth an absolute fortune—and let it pool into her palm. She stepped forward and shoved the glittering stones directly into Michelle’s trembling hands.
“Tell me everything,” Penelope ordered, her voice dropping to a dangerously quiet, lethal register. “And if you tell me the absolute truth, you will earn much more than this.”
Afonso realized exactly what was about to happen. His entire criminal empire was seconds away from turning to ash. With a feral roar, he tried to leap at Michelle to physically force her mouth shut.
But he never even made it two steps.
Theodore, who had been watching the entire nightmare unfold with silent, boiling anger, moved with terrifying speed. The massive driver tackled Afonso directly to the pavement. There was a heavy, sickening thud as Afonso hit the concrete. Theodore easily pinned the struggling man down, pressing a heavy knee firmly into his back, totally immobilizing him.
Penelope didn’t even flinch at the violence happening inches away from her. She stared dead into Michelle’s greedy, terrified eyes.
“Tell the truth. Right now,” she commanded.
Michelle clutched the heavy diamonds to her chest, trembling violently between sheer terror and uncontrollable greed. She glanced down at Afonso, who was thrashing uselessly under Theodore’s crushing weight, and let out a long, shaky sigh.
“Forgive me, darling,” she said, attempting a sickeningly false tone of sweetness. “But you know how much I love diamonds.”
