The sterile, overwhelming scent of clinical bleach and rubbing alcohol hung heavy in the air of the private hospital suite. The rhythmic, mechanical beeping of a heart monitor was the only sound breaking the suffocating silence. Michael Thompson sat on the edge of a vinyl visitor’s chair, his massive frame hunched forward, his elbows resting on his knees. A thick white medical bandage was wrapped tightly around his forehead, a stark contrast to his dark hair, concealing the brutal wound where the wooden stick had struck him.
He looked up, his dark eyes bloodshot and completely hollow as the senior attending physician stepped into the room, holding a specialized medical chart.
“Doctor, how is she?” Michael asked, his deep baritone cracking with a raw, desperate vulnerability.
The physician paused at the foot of the bed, his expression carrying the heavy, practiced gravity of a professional forced to deliver devastating news. He glanced at Emily’s unconscious, pale form beneath the thin hospital blankets before looking directly at the billionaire.
“The severe abdominal trauma resulting from the physical impact during the abduction caused an accidental miscarriage,” the doctor explained gently, his voice dropping into a quiet, respectful register.
The words struck Michael with the force of a freight train. The oxygen instantly vanished from the room. “A miscarriage?!” Michael gasped, his chest heaving as he stood up, his hands trembling violently. “Are you actively saying… she was pregnant?!”
“You didn’t know,” the doctor noted, a faint, unavoidable hint of professional accusation coloring his tone. “She was almost two months along. As the father-to-be, you should have been exponentially more careful with her environment. A miscarriage causes profound, lasting trauma, both physical and deeply psychological.”
Michael turned his gaze slowly toward Emily, the crushing, unbearable weight of absolute failure crashing down upon his shoulders. Hot, blinding tears welled in his dark eyes, spilling over his lashes to track down his bruised cheeks. “This is my fault,” he whispered into the silence, his voice shattering under the guilt. “I failed to protect her.”
He stepped closer to the doctor, his eyes desperate. “She didn’t even know about the pregnancy yet! The psychological shock right now would destroy her. Can we please keep this medical reality from her until she regains her baseline strength?”
“Do not talk nonsense, Mr. Thompson. We cannot simply fabricate medical records,” the doctor began, but seeing the sheer, agonizing desperation in Michael’s eyes, his strict posture softened. He sighed heavily. “Fine. For the immediate short term, to stabilize her vitals, I will inform her that she suffered a severe bout of food poisoning exacerbated by the physical assault. However, she will eventually need months of proper, dedicated rest to heal her body.”
An hour later, the quiet rustle of linen signaled Emily’s return to consciousness. She opened her eyes slowly, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights. As her vision cleared, she saw Michael sitting beside her, his head bandaged but very much alive.
“Oh my god,” Emily breathed, a massive, shuddering sigh of profound relief escaping her lips. “You completely scared me to death! When you collapsed on that concrete, I honestly thought I was dying right alongside you!”
Michael swallowed the massive, suffocating lump of grief in his throat, forcing a strained, reassuring smile onto his face to keep up the tragic charade. “I am so incredibly sorry, Emily. I failed to protect you from the ambush.”
“Don’t be silly,” Emily murmured, her voice weak but laced with her trademark independent warmth. She reached out, her trembling fingers gently tracing the edge of the bandage on his forehead. “You did your absolute best. You saved my life. They always say what doesn’t kill you makes you exponentially stronger. See? Aside from the doctor claiming I have severe food poisoning, I am perfectly fine.” She paused, her brow furrowing as the terrifying memories flooded back. “By the way. Have the authorities found Sophia yet? Sophia. She was the one who orchestrated the kidnapping. She is the monster who hit me with that heavy stick.”
Michael’s face instantly hardened into a mask of pure, lethal granite, his eyes flashing with a dark, unforgiving fire. “Sophia. I need to handle some immediate security logistics regarding her. Get some proper rest first, Emily. I will be right back.”
He stepped out into the pristine hallway just as Alex Johnson hurried out of the elevator bank, looking completely frantic.
“Mr. Thompson,” Alex said, catching his breath as he approached the suite. “How is assistant Emily doing?”
“Her physical injuries are nothing serious, though she requires extensive rest,” Michael replied, his voice a freezing whip. “Did the municipal police successfully catch the culprit?”
“They almost had the suspect secured at the warehouse perimeter,” Alex reported, his expression tight with frustration. “But right as they moved in, a coordinated group of hired thugs barged into the sector and violently blocked the police barricade. They deliberately created a massive tactical diversion, telling the police that Sophia was the killer to cause sheer chaos while she slipped away.”
“Sophia actually escaped?!” Michael exclaimed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white against his trousers. “How could they possibly let her slip through a federal perimeter?!”
“She vanished into the industrial grid, sir,” Alex confirmed gravely.
“I will personally offer a thirty million dollar liquid reward to help capture Sophia,” Michael declared, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying corporate authority. “Broadcast the bounty across every private security network in the city. Anyone who provides actionable leads will be heavily rewarded.”
“Understood immediately, sir,” Alex replied, typing frantically into his tablet.
Michael turned his gaze toward the towering glass window at the end of the corridor, staring out over the sprawling Chicago skyline. “Good. Sophia, you dared to hurt my family. You will pay for this with everything you possess.”
Later that afternoon, the security detail outside Emily’s door was momentarily distracted by a medical emergency down the hall. Emily was resting against her pillows when the heavy door creaked open. A disheveled, erratic figure slipped into the room, carrying a cheap, crinkled plastic grocery bag.
“I explicitly told you not to buy anything else from the cafeteria! I simply cannot finish all this food!” Emily called out, annoyed, assuming it was Michael returning with more provisions.
As the figure stepped into the light, Emily’s breath caught violently in her throat.
“What exactly are you doing here?!” Emily demanded, her heart hammering against her ribs as she recognized the unhinged features of Sophia Reed.
“I heard you were hospitalized. I naturally came to check on your condition,” Sophia drawled, her voice dripping with a sickly, venomous sweetness. She reached into the plastic bag, pulling out several pieces of heavily bruised, rotting fruit. “I brought you these fruits. Just throw them away if you can’t manage to eat them.” She deliberately placed the garbage onto Emily’s sterile bedside table. “I just picked them up directly from the alley trash. I thought they matched your current pathetic vibe perfectly.”
“You are absolutely not welcome in this room,” Emily stated, her independent pride flaring as she violently pushed the rotting fruit away, knocking it to the floor. “Take your toxic trash and get out of my sight before I scream for security!”
Sophia didn’t move. Instead, she smiled—a cold, terrifyingly cruel glint flashing deep within her erratic eyes. “I really envy your blissful ignorance, Emily. You just lost your unborn child, yet you are still sitting here acting so incredibly carefree.”
Emily froze solid, the ambient noise of the hospital completely evaporating from her ears. The room began to spin. “What… what child?”
Before Sophia could twist the psychological knife any further, the door swung open. Grandma marched into the room, carrying a heavy, insulated thermal container, entirely oblivious to the tension. “This time it’s my signature lotus root and pork rib soup! Grandma taught me how to make it perfectly! You will absolutely love the broth! Be sure to call grandma after you finish eating it! Don’t make her worry!”
Emily didn’t hear a single word of the culinary presentation. She looked in horror at Sophia’s victorious smirk, and then her eyes snapped toward the threshold as Michael Thompson finally re-entered the suite.
“Are you hiding something monumental from me, Michael?” Emily asked, her voice a hollow, trembling whisper that cut through the room. “How could that possibly be true? What is wrong with me? Our baby? Where is our child?! Did we actually lose our baby?!” The dam finally broke, and a wave of absolute, soul-crushing agony crashed over her. “Say something to me! Please, say something!” she cried out, thick, heavy tears streaming relentlessly down her pale face.
Michael, completely unable to maintain the protective medical secret any longer in the face of her devastation, rushed forward. He ignored Sophia completely, pulling Emily’s trembling, weeping form into a desperate, crushing hug. “It is my fault for not protecting him!” Michael choked out, his own tears finally falling as he buried his face in her hair. “It is all my fault! I failed to protect our child! I should have protected him!”
“It is okay,” Emily sobbed violently, her fingers clutching desperately at the fabric of his shirt as they shared the immense, suffocating grief. “This is not your fault, Michael. We can survive this. We can have another child.”
A sharp, theatrical scoff echoed from the doorway. Nicole, the actress still playing the role of Olivia Bennett, had been listening from the corridor and saw the perfect opportunity to inflict maximum emotional damage. She leaned against the doorframe, a wicked smirk on her lips.
“Don’t play the tragic victim, Emily,” Nicole lied smoothly, her voice dripping with calculated malice. “Your charts say otherwise. You explicitly told the attending doctor that you didn’t even want the baby. You actively told the medical staff to terminate it during the surgery.”
Michael’s head snapped up, his dark eyes blazing with an unadulterated, lethal fury that made the air in the room turn to ice. “Olivia Bennett is lying through her teeth!” he roared, his voice shaking the medical monitors. “I know the absolute medical truth! Sophia is the one who caused our baby’s death! It was entirely Sophia’s physical assault! She is already wanted by the federal police, and she will face ultimate justice!”
He turned his back on the toxic women, focusing his entire, devoted attention back onto Emily. He gently wiped the tears from her cheeks and reached for the thermal container Grandma had brought. With profound tenderness, he lifted a small spoonful of the warm broth to her trembling lips. “Open up for another one, sweetheart. You need your strength.”
Before the intimate moment could settle, Alex Johnson entered the room, looking exceptionally nervous as he clutched a sealed legal folder. “Mr. Thompson, I just found something monumental in the archives. Uh, given the current domestic atmosphere, maybe I should leave the room first.”
“This had better be critically important to my schedule, Alex,” Michael said, his voice grim and exhausted without looking up from Emily.
“It is completely crucial, sir! It directly concerns the legal status of Olivia Bennett!” Alex blurted out, unable to hold the intelligence back.
“Since when is the status of Olivia Bennett remotely important to our lives?” Emily scoffed weakly, her tear-stained face resting against her pillows.
“I swear to you, Emily! I have absolutely zero romantic feelings for Olivia Bennett! We are completely and legally unrelated in my heart!” Michael declared instantly, desperate to protect their bond.
Alex took a deep, bracing breath, adjusting his spectacles. “Mr. Thompson, according to the state registry… you and Olivia Bennett were never legally married! My deep forensic investigation shows her official marital status is permanently listed as unmarried. There was a massive clerical mistake in the bureaucratic paperwork years ago. You and the woman claiming to be Olivia Bennett were never legally bound. Your actual, legal wife on the corporate registry is someone else entirely.”
Emily gasped, a sudden, bright flash of cynical amusement breaking through the heavy grief in the room. “What?! Mr. Thompson is truly something spectacular! The brilliant billionaire cannot even recognize the identity of his own legal wife! You even managed to fall completely into someone else’s elaborate trap!” She looked at Michael, her independent spirit sparking to life. “This is a pretty common domestic occurrence, right? Because as it turns out, you don’t even know who your own husband is either!”
“I am absolutely not like you in that regard!” Michael retorted, his defensive pride flaring playfully as he tried to match her shifting energy. “I definitely know exactly who my registry partner is!”
“My grandma explicitly told me you are completely clueless about your own administrative life!” Emily shot back, a faint smile touching her lips.
“Why on earth does that woman tell you absolutely everything about my private conversations?!” Michael exclaimed, throwing his hands up in mock exasperation.
“It simply cannot be helped! Grandma simply adores my presence!” Emily replied, a beautiful, mischievous glint finally returning to her intelligent eyes. She recognized that the playful banter was their desperate, loving mechanism to survive the crushing tragedy of the day. “Your top corporate priority right now isn’t finding your real, elusive wife and executing a divorce.” She paused, her smile turning highly competitive. “Let’s make a high-stakes bet right now! Whoever manages to get their administrative divorce finalized first loses the wager, and must permanently move in with the winner! If you lose this race, Mr. Thompson, you will be moving your billionaire self into my tiny Queens apartment!”
“Okay! You have a deal!” Michael said instantly, rising to the fierce challenge with a confident smirk. “As the commanding CEO of Thompson Enterprises, finding a single administrative individual in this city will be an absolute breeze!”
“Oh, really? Is that your stance?” Emily scoffed, pulling her newly repaired mobile device from the bedside table. “I actually possess my mystery husband’s secure encrypted number! One single phone call will prove my victory right now!”
She tapped the screen and dialed the familiar digits. The line rang and rang, echoing loudly in the quiet hospital room, before it abruptly clicked straight to an automated voicemail system.
“What exactly is going on with the connection?” Emily muttered, her brow furrowing in confusion.
“Assistant Emily, based on standard cellular protocols, your specific situation usually means you have been completely blocked by the receiving party,” Alex noted helpfully from the corner.
“Why on earth would he actively block my number?!” Emily exclaimed, thoroughly offended by the rejection.
“Actually,” Michael said, a remarkably smug, victorious look settling over his handsome features, “when I arranged the contract, I gave my hidden wife an exclusive black card tied to my primary accounts. By checking the elite bank routing records, my team will locate her exact geographical position instantly. Do not cry when you lose this wager, Emily. You should probably start packing Mrs. Thompson’s residential belongings right now.”
“I will initiate the banking trace right away, Mr. Thompson!” Alex replied, turning on his heel and heading out into the corridor.
Emily, utterly furious at being outmaneuvered, stared at her screen and tried the dial sequence again. “How dare that scoundrel block my line! Make a secure call for me from your device! All right!”
“What is the exact routing number?” Michael asked, casually taking her mobile device from her hands to inspect the screen.
“It is 56583!” Emily rattled off rapidly.
Michael paused, his thumb hovering over the glass. “Say that entire sequence again?”
“It is 1565836!”
Michael looked down at the illuminated digits on her screen, a sudden, profound shock freezing the blood in his veins. He slowly raised his dark eyes to meet Emily’s bewildered gaze. “Is this specific sequence really your husband’s encrypted number? Emily… this is Mr. Thompson’s exact private number.”
“No way! That is impossible!” Emily exclaimed, shaking her head fiercely. “I know for an absolute fact this isn’t your corporate phone number!”
Alex Johnson stepped back into the room, holding a printed manifest. He glanced at the digits displayed on the screen. “Actually, Miss Carter, that is Mr. Thompson’s highly secure private line,” Alex confirmed softly. “Only a handful of elite executives have access to that specific routing.”
“Then check this financial card for me right now!” Emily demanded, her heart hammering wildly as she thrust her matte-black registry card directly at the assistant.
Alex took the heavy plastic, his eyes scanning the embossed corporate codes. He looked up, his expression a mix of absolute shock and professional realization. “Miss Carter… this specific card also belongs to Mr. Thompson.”
Emily’s jaw completely dropped, her breath catching so sharply it sent a phantom ache through her bruised ribs. The dizzying, chaotic fragments of the past year violently crashed together in her mind, forming a picture so utterly impossible she could barely breathe.
“So… Michael Thompson is my legal husband,” Emily whispered into the sterile quiet of the hospital room, her wide eyes locked onto the black corporate card resting in Alex’s trembling hands. “I am that mysterious, absentee wife from the registry.”
Alex looked entirely terrified, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously as he pushed his thick-rimmed spectacles up his nose. The sheer gravity of holding the CEO’s most intimate domestic secret was clearly overloading his administrative circuits. “That absolutely seems to be the case, Miss Carter! Oh my god. I won’t get fired by the board for knowing too much sensitive data, will I? I need to inform Mr. Thompson right this second!”
Before Alex could sprint into the corridor to retrieve Michael—who had stepped out momentarily to confer with the attending physician regarding her recovery—Emily’s newly replaced mobile device began to vibrate against the bedside table. She snatched it up, her artistic mind racing a mile a minute.
“Wait a second, Alex! Don’t say a word to him yet,” Emily commanded, answering the secure line.
“Hello?” a crisp, professional voice echoed through the speaker. “This is the executive legal liaison for Mr. Thompson. We are confirming your mandatory appointment for tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. at the County Clerk’s Office to finalize the divorce paperwork. Is this arrangement still fine?”
Emily’s heart executed a magnificent, soaring flip inside her chest. “Divorce? Fine. I will be there.”
She hung up the phone, a beautiful, mischievous glint instantly returning to her tear-stained eyes. She looked at the panicked assistant, her independent pride flaring with a brilliant, resilient light. “Michael Thompson wants me at the registry at ten o’clock tomorrow morning. He explicitly told me to wear the purple rosemary to identify myself and finalize our divorce.”
It must be Mr. Thompson’s legal team, Alex thought, still reeling from the collateral damage of the revelation. “Should I go out to the hallway and notify him right now, Miss Carter?”
“Absolutely no need,” Emily said, a slow, triumphant smile gracing her lips as she leaned back against the sterile pillows, the heavy grief of the day temporarily eclipsed by this monumental truth. “I am going to surprise him myself.”
“Understood,” Alex replied, offering a shaky nod as he backed out of the room, entirely overwhelmed by the high-society drama.
The following morning, the sky over Chicago was a brilliant, freezing blue. At the municipal County Clerk’s Office, the imposing marble columns cast long shadows across the plaza. Michael Thompson stood near the brass entrance, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored midnight-blue overcoat. His dark eyes were fixed on the pavement, his chest heavy with the agonizing reality that he was about to legally terminate his marriage to a faceless woman, all while his heart belonged entirely to Emily Carter.
“Mr. Thompson, you are completely on your own now,” Alex murmured respectfully, stepping back toward the idling Escalade to give his employer absolute privacy.
Michael let out a low, exhausted sigh, checking his platinum watch. “Waiting for someone?” he muttered cynically to himself.
Then, he heard the familiar, rhythmic click of heels against the marble stairs. He looked up, his breath instantly catching in his throat.
Emily was walking toward him. She wore a stunning, tailored winter coat, and pinned flawlessly to her lapel was a fresh, vibrant sprig of purple rosemary. The morning sunlight caught the soft, hopeful smile playing on her lips.
“Emmy!” Michael exclaimed, his executive composure completely shattering as he closed the distance between them in three long strides. “Why on earth aren’t you resting back at the hospital? What brings you out into the cold? Are you feeling better?”
“You are standing here to get divorced, aren’t you?” Emily asked, her voice soft but incredibly steady, her eyes locking onto his with a profound, knowing depth.
Michael swallowed hard, the guilt of his double life pressing against his lungs. “I am finalizing this administrative divorce today, Emily. I promise you.”
Emily reached out, her delicate fingers gently tracing the edge of his tailored lapel. “You are my legal husband, Michael. The incredibly stingy, demanding boss I constantly complained about on those late-night calls? That was you. The clumsy, frustrating subordinate you mentored? That was me.” She looked up, thick, happy tears welling in her intelligent eyes. “Let’s go inside and get divorced.”
Michael froze, his brilliant mind short-circuiting as the monumental reality of her words struck him like a physical blow. The purple rosemary. The precise vocal cadence. The absolute, undeniable truth.
“Good thing it is you,” Emily whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek as she offered a watery, radiant smile. “So… are we still actively getting divorced today?”
“I am never getting divorced,” Michael roared softly, a magnificent, breathless laugh tearing from his chest as he pulled her fiercely into his arms. He buried his face in her hair, holding her so tightly it felt as though he was trying to fuse their souls together on the municipal steps.
Before they could fully process the absolute miracle of their union, the violent screech of tires shattered the romantic quiet of the plaza. Alex Johnson sprinted from the corporate sedan, his face pale with suffocating panic as he waved a data tablet.
“Mr. Thompson! Mr. Thompson!” Alex shouted, completely out of breath. “Our conglomerate’s central funds were just massively embezzled by Olivia Bennett!”
“What?!” Michael exclaimed, keeping one arm securely wrapped around Emily’s waist as his lethal corporate instincts instantly rebooted. “How on earth did that actress secure the security authorization to move capital?!”
“The old man explicitly approved her access yesterday!” Alex replied frantically. “She utilized his Chairman Emeritus codes!”
“How could I possibly forget about that vulnerability?!” Michael groaned, rubbing his bandaged forehead. “Did you immediately call the federal police?”
“We already dispatched the authorities! The police have successfully intercepted the imposter at the international airport terminal! They want us on-site immediately to press formal charges!”
“Understood,” Michael stated, his jaw locking into a mask of pure granite. “All right, let’s head over to the airport right now.” He squeezed Emily’s hand reassuringly.
Just as they turned toward the Escalade, Michael’s secure mobile device began to ring violently. He answered it, recognizing his grandfather’s private line.
“Hello? Michael, your secretary just called to tell me you are violently sick!” Grandpa’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with elder panic. “Which hospital room are you currently resting in?!”
“Grandpa, I am absolutely not sick!” Michael exclaimed, a sudden, terrifying chill washing over his chest. “Who exactly told you I was hospitalized?!”
“Your devoted secretary, Sophia, told me just a moment ago! She is right here with me!” Grandpa insisted.
“Sophia?!” Michael’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, the blood draining completely from his face. “Grandpa, listen to me very carefully! She is a highly dangerous, wanted criminal! Do not let her—”
The line went completely, horrifyingly dead.
“Hello?! Grandpa! Hello?!” Michael shouted into the receiver, his voice cracking with absolute terror.
Alex, realizing the catastrophic security breach, looked at his tablet. “Oh my god. Grandpa is currently isolated with Sophia!”
Michael pivoted instantly, his protective instincts in overdrive. “Alex, take Emmy directly to the safety of the police station right now. I will send you the tactical location once I track his device.”
“I am absolutely coming with you, Michael,” Emily declared, her independent pride refusing to let him face the monster alone. Her grip on his hand was like iron.
“Okay. Let’s go together then,” Michael replied, knowing he couldn’t win that argument. They threw themselves into the vehicle, the Escalade roaring to life.
Meanwhile, in the desolate, freezing shell of an abandoned high-rise construction site on the outskirts of the city, Sophia had dragged the bewildered patriarch to the exposed concrete edge of the fifth floor.
“Michael, why aren’t you here yet?!” Sophia shrieked into the freezing wind, her eyes wide with a manic, unhinged psychotic break. “I have been waiting for you forever! If you don’t arrive soon, this fragile old man is going to kick the bucket right here on the concrete!”
The heavy steel access doors of the stairwell suddenly burst open. Michael, Emily, and Alex rushed onto the exposed, wind-swept floor.
“What exactly have you done to my grandfather?!” Michael demanded, his chest heaving as he stepped cautiously onto the unfinished concrete, his hands raised in a placating gesture.
Sophia laughed—a high, hollow, terrifying sound that echoed off the exposed steel beams. “I didn’t physically do anything to him yet! He got sick entirely on his own from the stress! Where the hell have you been, Michael?! You really don’t understand my devotion at all! I love you so incredibly much! It is completely obvious that I love you unconditionally!”
“I know! I love you too! Just come over here and step away from the ledge!” Michael pleaded desperately, deploying every psychological tactic he knew to keep her calm and draw her away from the drop.
“I am waiting for you to prove it!” Sophia shrieked, teetering dangerously close to the abyss.
“You are completely insane,” Emily whispered in horror, her heart hammering against her ribs as she watched the chaotic standoff.
Grandpa, clutching his chest as his breathing grew terrifyingly shallow, looked at the deranged woman. “Michael…” he gasped weakly.
“Do you believe my commitment now?” Sophia taunted, grabbing the old man’s collar. “I will make this old man bleed out right here and throw him over the side!”
Michael stepped forward, his dark eyes locked entirely on the madwoman. “Sophia, take your intense professional grudge out on me! Do not hurt an innocent elder!”
Sophia looked at Michael, a twisted, macabre smile spreading across her face. “How could I ever bear to treat my true love like that? I adore you far too much for physical violence! What do you really want from me? Because I want you, Michael!”
“Okay! I will trade places for Grandpa right now!” Michael offered instantly, moving slowly toward the precipice.
“Michael, let’s swap then! It will be fine,” Emily said, her voice shaking but resolute, desperately trying to de-escalate the situation and provide a distraction.
Sophia chuckled, the sound devoid of all human empathy. “Exceptionally well played, Michael Thompson! Guess who I really am beneath this corporate mask, and I will let you switch places with the old man.”
“What is there to guess?!” Michael said, entirely exasperated and terrified for his grandfather’s failing heart. “You are Sophia Reed! Can we execute the trade now?!”
“Wrong guess!” Sophia shrieked, her face contorting with a violent, historical rage. “You do not remember my identity at all! But I am hopelessly, deeply in love with your soul! Come closer to the edge. It is time to make the trade. Naturally. By the way, a friendly medical reminder: if that old man doesn’t get treated by a cardiac unit in the next five minutes, he will definitely die.”
“Emmy, take Grandpa to the hospital immediately!” Michael commanded, rushing forward to grab the old man’s arm just as Sophia released him.
“Okay, wait for me! I will come back with the authorities to save you!” Emily cried, wrapping her arms around the gasping patriarch and helping him stumble toward the safety of the stairwell. “Let’s go, Grandpa! Hold on!”
Sophia watched them retreat, a triumphant, lethal glint flashing in her erratic eyes. “The pathetic nuisances are finally gone. Now it is just us two, Michael. You know exactly what my endgame is, don’t you? You want us to die together so our souls can bond permanently.”
“You guessed right,” Michael lied smoothly, looking at her with a strange, tragic calmness as he calculated the physical distance between them and the absolute drop. He stepped right up to the edge, the freezing wind whipping his overcoat. “You really do understand me best. Since I cannot have you in this corporate life, I will claim your devotion in death.”
“In death? You will finally be mine!” Sophia screamed in pure, euphoric madness. She lunged forward with terrifying speed, shoving her hands violently against his chest to push him toward the abyss. “Go over there!”
Michael anticipated the strike. As he lost his footing on the icy concrete, he twisted his massive frame, ensuring he didn’t pull her down with him, and plummeted backward into the open air.
The rhythmic, steady beeping of a heart monitor slowly pulled Michael from the crushing darkness. He opened his eyes, wincing against the harsh, clinical lights of the hospital room.
“Whoa, Michael. You are finally awake!” Emily exclaimed, sitting instantly upright in the visitor’s chair beside his bed. Her beautiful eyes were red and swollen from hours of weeping, but a radiant, overwhelming relief washed over her face.
“Are you feeling any severe pain?” she asked, her trembling fingers gently brushing the hair back from his bandaged forehead.
“My head hurts immensely,” Michael mumbled, his voice raspy and disoriented.
“The attending doctor said you suffered a mild concussion and severe bruising,” Emily explained, her voice thick with emotion. “Some heavy, dedicated rest should help you heal. It is an absolute miracle that I alerted Taylor Green and the tactical police units. That was the fifth floor of the construction site! You just allowed her to push you off like that?! If you hadn’t crashed through those heavy industrial safety nets on the third tier, you would have died! If anything happened to your life, Michael, I absolutely wouldn’t want to live either!”
“Do not talk such toxic nonsense!” Michael scolded weakly, trying to sit up despite the protesting muscles in his back. “Even if I perish, you must promise to keep living well!”
“Ugh, are you trying to make me angry again while you are hooked up to an IV?” Emily teased softly, a beautiful, watery smile touching her lips as she leaned her forehead against his shoulder. “Fine. I will stop talking.” She paused, her mind shifting to the logistics of the nightmare. “Where is Grandpa?”
“Grandpa is perfectly fine. He is resting in the cardiac unit in the next room,” Michael replied, his breathing steadying as he held her close. “Oh, right. The authorities informed me that Sophia has been permanently remanded to a high-security mental institution.”
“A mental institution?!” Emily exclaimed, her eyes widening. “The federal police investigation just concluded. It turns out the real Sophia Reed currently lives abroad in Europe. The ‘Sophia’ we knew on the corporate floor is actually a woman named Ava. She is a severely unstable psychiatric patient who escaped after suffering abuse at a state institution. She subsequently stole Sophia’s identity and credentials to infiltrate Thompson Enterprises.”
Ava, Michael thought, the name triggering a buried, distant memory deep within his subconscious. He remembered a freezing, bitter day in a dark back alley in downtown Los Angeles, nearly a decade ago. A young, terrified woman, clearly homeless and shivering, was huddled near a dumpster.
“Where did this pathetic beggar come from? Dare to steal my food?” a group of vicious street bullies had sneered, circling her. “This beggar is kind of pretty. Want some heat? Take off your clothes if you want it. I’ll buy you more.”
Michael, a young, idealistic man fresh out of university at the time, had stepped boldly forward into the danger. “Enjoying the food, okay? Hey. Mind your own business, punk! I suggest you scram right now or I’ll call the cops!” He had aggressively chased the thugs away before offering the shivering girl his own jacket and some warm food. “A young lady like you should stay entirely away from drunkards. Got it? Are you hungry? Wait right here. I’ll be right back.”
He remembered pointing her toward safety. “Go that way. There is a municipal police station five hundred meters ahead. Ask the officers for help there. Understood? What is your name?”
“I’m Ava,” she had whispered.
“Michael Thompson,” he had replied kindly before walking away, entirely unaware that a simple act of charity would spawn a decade-long, psychotic obsession.
Michael. Ava. Now I completely remember, Michael thought, staring at the sterile ceiling of the hospital room. So it was her all along. No wonder she relentlessly kept trying to force me to say her true name on the roof.
The heavy wooden door of the suite swung open, interrupting his dark reflections. Grandma marched into the room, carrying a massive woven tote bag. “Grandma! What brings you all the way down here?” Emily asked, hastily wiping her tears and sitting up straight.
“I brought you some premium, homemade snacks! I made them entirely myself! Perfectly healthy and hygienic for recovery!” Grandma beamed, completely unbothered by the medical equipment as she unpacked Tupperware containers.
“Grandma! Your traditional cooking is simply amazing!” Emily gushed, eager to lighten the heavy atmosphere. “It is exponentially better than any five-star restaurant food in the city!”
Grandma chuckled, her eyes crinkling with deep affection. “Look at this sweet kid. Always knowing exactly how to sweet-talk her elders. Heard you fell from a massive building trying to save Grandpa, young man. You are such an incredibly filial, brave child. Unlike my Emmy’s pathetic, absentee husband. He never comes home all year. I am absolutely sure he has a cheap mistress hidden away outside the city. What an absolute scoundrel.”
Emily looked at Michael, her face flushing a brilliant, magnificent crimson as absolute mortification set in. “Grandma? What affair? That is complete administrative nonsense. Non-existent.”
“Who on earth told you those vicious rumors, Grandma?” Michael asked, fighting back a massive, highly amused smirk.
“The son-in-law next door!” Grandma declared proudly, arranging the snacks on the tray. “From Aunt Guo’s family unit. He never comes home all year either, completely out of nowhere. They say he is actively having an affair, and her daughter cries daily. Utterly heartbroken.”
“Grandma?” Emily said, desperately trying to change the trajectory of the conversation. “I truly believe that Emmy’s husband… wouldn’t ever do such terrible things.”
“What do you know about men of his low character? He is absolutely nothing like you, Mr. Thompson!” Grandma retorted, patting Michael’s arm affectionately. “By the way, aren’t you two actively planning to be together permanently after finalizing your respective divorces? Hurry up with the paperwork! I want healthy great-grandkids before my knees give out!”
“Grandma!” Emily exclaimed, burying her burning face in her hands. “Actually… He is the man who never comes home. Michael… he is my legal husband of one year.”
Grandma froze mid-motion, holding a container of sliced apples. She looked slowly at Emily, then at the towering billionaire in the hospital bed, and blinked three times in rapid succession. “I must be… getting entirely senile in my old age,” she muttered, slowly backing toward the door with a bewildered expression. “I desperately need more sleep. I am going to sleep properly at home. Reset my biological sleep cycle. Grandma is still incredibly confused. Let me excuse myself.”
Five beautiful, chaotic, and incredibly healing years later, the morning sun streamed brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of their sprawling Chicago penthouse.
“Grandma? Is Emmy awake yet?” Michael called out from the hallway, adjusting his tailored cuffs as he prepared for the day.
“Still fast asleep, probably,” Grandma replied cheerfully from the kitchen, the rich smell of premium coffee filling the air.
Michael walked into their luxurious master bedroom, a warm, completely devoted smile gracing his features. “Get up, Mrs. Thompson! Five more minutes are officially over! Wake up immediately! Today is Ethan and Lucas’s kindergarten sports day! We absolutely cannot be late for the opening ceremonies!”
“Grandma will go on my behalf!” Emily mumbled, burying her face deep into the down pillows, completely exhausted from a late-night design launch.
“I am absolutely not going to the track field!” Grandma called out loudly from the foyer. “I am meeting Grandpa Thompson in the municipal park for our morning Tai Chi session! I am leaving the penthouse right now!”
Michael leaned over the mattress, his large hands resting on either side of her tangled hair. “Emily Carter, if you do not get up this exact second… I will be forced to use extreme, highly inappropriate executive measures. Rise and shine!”
Emily finally fluttered her eyes open, squinting against the morning light to find Michael’s devastatingly handsome face hovering mere inches from hers. “Michael Thompson! I simply cannot take this tyrannical management style anymore! I want a divorce!” she declared playfully, her voice thick with sleep.
Michael chuckled—a rich, booming sound that vibrated deep in his chest—and pulled her effortlessly into his strong arms. “Emily Carter, are you actively looking for a corporate spanking before breakfast?”
“You… you are an absolute menace,” Emily stammered, wrapping her arms around his neck as a beautiful, radiant smile broke across her face. “I am just kidding with you. But I am officially mad at you, Michael Thompson.”
“Do not be angry with me, okay?” Michael murmured, pressing a soft, deeply loving kiss to her forehead.
“I am not truly angry. But I will ask you two critical questions. Answer them correctly, and I will officially forgive your morning tyranny.”
“Go ahead. Interrogate me,” Michael challenged softly.
“First question. When exactly did we first meet? Give me the precise month and date.”
Michael paused, pretending to think incredibly hard to tease her. “May 21st. In the lobby elevator.”
“Correct. Now, when exactly did you start liking me?” Emily asked, a mischievous, deeply romantic glint in her intelligent eyes.
“I… Can’t answer that easily,” Michael teased, his eyes twinkling.
“Huh? Now I am really angry!” Emily huffed, pretending to push him away.
Michael pulled her flush against his chest, his voice dropping into a soft, breathtakingly sincere whisper that commanded her entire soul. “I am not playing games anymore. From the exact moment I first saw you defending that elderly man in the elevator, I already liked you. I blame your ridiculously beautiful, fierce face. I was totally, irrevocably smitten by your courage.”
“Mr. Handsome. Mr. Perfect,” Emily whispered, leaning up to capture his lips in a slow, magnificent kiss. “You are officially forgiven.”
She smiled against his mouth, snuggling deeply into his warm embrace. “Let’s go get some breakfast. Let’s go.”
Miles away, cloaked in the sterile, heavily guarded walls of a high-security mental institution, Ava sat perfectly still in her bleak, white-walled room. Her erratic eyes were locked onto a worn, heavily crumpled newspaper clipping featuring a photograph of Michael Thompson.
“Five years,” Ava whispered into the chilling silence, her fingers tracing the outline of his jaw with a terrifying, unhinged devotion. “Ava missed you so incredibly much, Michael. I know. You do not like this specific face of mine. So this time… I will surgically become the exact person you love. And I will come back to you.”
