Part 6
Nolan released Rebecca’s wrist and stepped back.
Rebecca reached the service door, but the State Patrol trooper stepped between her and Sophie’s cot. “You need to wait until the medical team and child protection clear contact.”
“I’m her mother.”
“Then help her by giving them space.”
Rebecca stopped with both hands still raised, then slowly lowered them.
Sophie looked at her through the glass. There was recognition in the child’s face, but not relief. She turned toward Walt and hid beneath the warmed blanket.
Rebecca pressed a hand to her mouth.
Behind her, Kate Ellison asked Nolan the question again. “Why did you tell your wife your daughter was in Colorado?”
Nolan stepped away from the podium. “My family has been subjected to months of medical stress. Rebecca is in no condition to answer questions, and neither is my daughter.”
“I didn’t answer,” Rebecca said. She turned toward the cameras. “He did.”
An aide reached for her, but she moved beyond his hand. “Nolan showed me videos from the treatment center. Sophie wore the same blue sweater in every one. I asked why. He said routines helped children with trauma.” Her voice shook. “When I wanted to go there, he told my doctors travel would cause another breakdown. I signed papers I could barely read.”
Nolan’s face did not collapse. It became more controlled. “Rebecca, you are confused.”
“I was medicated,” she said. “That is not the same thing.”
Kate lowered her folder. “Mrs. Calder, did you ever authorize Balsam Cut as a treatment site?”
“No.” Rebecca’s answer was immediate. “I had never heard that name until you said it.”
Nolan moved toward her and stopped when the State Patrol trooper stepped into his path. “My wife’s medical condition is private.”
Rebecca looked at the hand he had extended, then at the cameras he had arranged. “You made my illness public every time it protected you.”
Two agents in plain winter coats entered the atrium with uniformed state troopers behind them. The woman in front identified herself as Leah Brooks of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and handed Nolan an emergency protective-care and no-contact order signed by a judge.
“Sophie is in temporary agency custody,” she said. “We are also executing search and seizure warrants at Balsam Cut, the Calder Children’s Fund offices, and Calder Industrial Services. The hospital has revoked your private security team’s access badges. Troopers will secure the company weapons named in the warrants.”
Travis Boone appeared near the side exit. He saw the troopers and changed direction.
Kate’s camera operator followed him.
Boone made it only as far as the elevators. A trooper stopped him, and Agent Brooks joined them. Walt could not hear the questions through the glass, but he saw Boone look once toward Sophie and then toward Nolan.
Nolan pointed toward Walt. “That man broke into a private medical residence and removed my child.”
“He arrived with her in a neighboring-county ambulance under State Patrol escort,” Kate said.
Nolan ignored her. “Chief Deputy Heller can verify—”
Agent Brooks looked up from her phone. “Chief Deputy Heller is being detained at Walter Mercer’s property. A state fire investigator is also on the way.”
Nolan looked from Agent Brooks to the cameras and said nothing.
The pediatric doors closed between Sophie and the cameras. Behind them, the staff returned their attention to her. Doctors treated dehydration and cold exposure, examined her airway, and documented bruises that had faded to yellow along one arm. Nothing was done without warning her first. When she could not answer aloud, the social worker gave her cards marked YES, NO, STOP, and I DON’T KNOW.
Walt sat against the wall until a nurse brought him clean scrubs and a paper bag for his wet clothes. His cabin smoke still clung to his hair. The medical bag rested at his feet, wet and smoke-stained along one side.
An evidence technician came for Owen’s phone, the waterproof packet, the labeled medication carton, the discharge envelope, and the enamel pin. When the technician unfastened the bluebird from Sophie’s pajamas, Sophie reached out suddenly.
“Would you like to keep it?” the social worker asked.
Sophie shook her head.
“Do you want it placed in the evidence bag?”
She nodded. Then she forced out two rough words. “Camera bird.”
Walt remembered the archived videos. The bluebird appeared in every one; it had been part of Nolan’s staging, not a private gift.
The evidence technician sealed it without comment.
Agent Brooks returned near dusk. Boone and Heller were in custody pending interviews about the confinement, the forced entry, and the fire. Nolan had been taken to a separate location for questioning while agents searched his offices; formal charging decisions would come from prosecutors after the first evidence review.
“And Owen Pike?” Walt asked.
“His truck went off a forest road east of the county line. He has a broken leg and a head injury, but he is alive. Before they transported him, he gave a recorded statement and unlocked the archive for us. His son is safe with an aunt.”
Walt was relieved Owen had survived and resented himself for it. Survival did not erase twenty-six days; it meant Owen would have to answer for them.
“He asked whether Sophie made it,” Brooks said.
Walt looked at the child asleep beneath hospital blankets. “Tell him she did. Don’t tell him that makes everything right.”
After midnight, Sophie woke from a nightmare without making a sound. Her hands clawed at the air until Walt said her name and she focused on him. A nurse checked the monitor while Walt remained where Sophie could see him.
“Gray?” she asked.
“Back in the woods.”
“Owen?”
“At another hospital. He’s alive.”
She absorbed that. Then she looked toward the overnight patient sitter near the door and back at Walt.
“Can I go with Walt?”
No one answered immediately. Walt had no house, no current foster license, and no legal relationship to the child beyond being the stranger who had found her. Wanting to say yes did not make yes an honest answer.
He pulled his chair closer. “I’m going to find out what I’m allowed to do,” he said. “And I won’t disappear while I’m asking…”
