My Grandson Told Me to Look Under the Table… I Froze!

The hotel’s trained security personnel quickly approached the tense scene. In a highly polite but incredibly firm manner, they directly asked Shade to immediately leave the grand event hall.

“Madam, please come with us right now,” one of the large guards stated in a highly cold, professional voice.

Shade desperately backed away, frantically looking around the massive room for any sign of help. But absolutely no one stepped forward to side with her. Many disgusted guests actively shook their heads, quickly leaving their expensive, half-empty wine glasses on the tables and sighing heavily with total resignation.

“Absolutely unbelievable,” one guest whispered loudly into the quiet room. “How on earth can someone be so incredibly, maliciously cruel?” another muttered in pure horror.

Kunle stood completely motionless. He had both hands tightly gripping his head, looking exactly as if he were desperately trying to manually keep his entire world from violently collapsing into dust. Then, looking exactly as if he absolutely no longer had the physical strength required to stand, he slowly, heavily knelt down directly in front of Namdi. His deep voice was entirely choked with heavy tears.

“Son… please forgive me. Please forgive me, my sweet boy, for not fiercely protecting you.”

I clearly saw heavy, dark tears run rapidly down his handsome cheeks, and I physically felt my own old heart violently break right in two. I gently helped Kunle slowly get back up to his feet, affectionately squeezing his broad shoulders. I stated in a highly grave but incredibly confident voice, “Luckily, we stopped it completely in time. This highly false, toxic happiness has to permanently end right here and right now.”

I looked directly at Shade. She was being aggressively escorted out of the room amidst hundreds of intense looks of pure, unadulterated contempt. Deep in my heart, I knew with absolute certainty that she never truly was, and never, ever would be, a real part of this loving family.

In the long, difficult days that heavily followed that absolute nightmare of a wedding, my shattered family was entirely caught in a heavy, silent whirlwind. It was a dark time where deep emotional wounds still bled freely, and thousands of unanswered questions constantly floated heavily in the tense air. I genuinely felt exactly as if I had literally just woken up from a terrifying nightmare in which I had almost permanently lost Namdi, the precious grandson whom I deeply love far more than my own life.

The shocking story of the failed, disastrous wedding spread incredibly rapidly absolutely everywhere. It dominated the conversations from the small suburban streets to the long phone calls of very distant relatives. The old house phone simply wouldn’t ever stop ringing. Some callers harshly blamed Kunle for blindly, foolishly trusting Shade. Others deeply sympathized with little Namdi, the completely innocent child who was almost the tragic victim of a highly evil, calculated murder plot.

But for me, every single ringing call was just another highly painful, exhausting reminder of exactly what we had all just barely survived. Kunle became incredibly withdrawn after everything that happened. He was absolutely no longer the happy, radiant man confidently wearing the navy blue traditional robe from his wedding day.

Instead, he would silently, dutifully take Namdi directly to and from his school every single day in total silence. His dark gaze was entirely filled with deep, agonizing pain and intense, crushing guilt. The hated name Shade, treated exactly like a dark curse, was absolutely never mentioned inside the walls of the house ever again.

I looked at Kunle constantly with a deeply pained heart. I intuitively knew he absolutely needed a lot of time to properly heal. He needed time to truly find himself again after being so horribly, maliciously betrayed by the very person he had deeply loved. I absolutely didn’t blame him, because I deeply understand that powerful love can completely blind people. But I also firmly knew that our strong family simply had to rise from these dark ashes.

I dutifully continued to care for little Namdi exactly as I had done every single day since Bisi tragically left us. I lovingly cooked his absolute favorite, comforting dishes, like the rich, seasoned rice with tender chicken, or a very soft, sweet custard. I was desperately trying my best to slowly give him back a solid sense of safety and security in his own home.

But I eventually realized exactly who really healed little Namdi’s shattered soul. It absolutely wasn’t me. It was entirely Chioma, my incredibly wonderful, devoted adopted daughter.

Every single morning, she would very carefully, meticulously prepare his lunch for school. She spent extra time carefully choosing safe foods, making absolutely certain there was nothing with shrimp or anything else that could ever possibly put his life in danger. She would even take the time to write a sweet, little note for his teacher carefully explaining Namdi’s severe allergy. She always included a massive, happy smiling face beautifully drawn with a bright crayon, which he absolutely loved to see.

“Auntie Chioma, you really draw so incredibly well!” Namdi would loudly exclaim with pure joy when he eagerly opened his lunchbox. I would clearly see his bright eyes fully light up, looking exactly as if a massive part of his stolen innocence had finally returned to him.

Every single afternoon, Chioma would happily take Namdi directly to the nearby park. I used to quietly watch them play from a safe distance. I loved seeing exactly how she patiently taught him how to proudly fly a colorful kite, showing him exactly how to tightly hold the long string so it would quickly fly incredibly high into the sky.
