Part 5
The technician released the trigger. In the sudden quiet Daniel could hear the fallen fence ticking as the metal settled against the ground. Nobody tried to reach the gate.
Beth had raised both hands, palms visible. The deputy stood near the entrance with one foot turned toward them, caught between moving forward and staying where he’d been told. Abby pressed herself against the gatepost.
Ruth crossed the short distance to Poppy. She stopped alongside her daughter, bringing her body close enough for the calf to lean against. Daniel was acutely aware of the space occupied by his own feet, and of how little force it would take to erase it.
Poppy found his wrist again.
He loosened his hand, giving her room to release him. She didn’t. Ruth explored the calf’s head with her trunk, then the rim of the tire, while Beth spoke softly from the other side.
“She’s right here with you, Ruth. We’re going to stay quiet.”
The adult’s trunk moved down Daniel’s arm. It paused over the fresh scrape, then passed across his fingers and toward the equipment. He kept his hand where Poppy could feel it and concentrated on breathing through his nose.
Ruth returned her attention to the calf. She rested her trunk against Poppy’s back, and Beth slowly lowered her hands.
“We’re going to try again.”
One technician looked at the cow, then at the veterinarian. “You want us to work this close?”
“Look at the calf. She’s steadier with her here.” Beth paused. “Give her mother space. Every change we make, we make slowly.”
They rearranged themselves without crossing between the two elephants. The operator let the motor rise gradually this time. Poppy flinched, but the broad contact of Ruth’s body stayed beside her, and she didn’t turn.
Daniel ran his thumb over a bristled patch below her eye. “That’s the noise. It’s going to come and go. You just listen to me.”
The first cut sent the smell of warm rubber through the pasture. Daniel couldn’t see the blade from where he stood; he watched Beth’s face instead. Her attention moved between the protected cutting area, Poppy’s breathing, and the mother’s feet.
Poppy gave a brief, frightened cry. Ruth answered at once, low enough that Daniel felt it against the hand touching her daughter. Beth stopped the work until the calf settled, then gave the technician permission to continue.
Sweat ran beneath Daniel’s collar. He wanted to wipe his forehead but didn’t want to take his hand away. On the other side of the calf, Beth adjusted her position a few inches and checked the shield again.
The work advanced in intervals too short to judge. Each time the motor stopped, Daniel hoped the silence meant they were finished. Each time, Beth inspected the cut, felt beneath the edge, and signaled for a little more.
Outside the gate, Bell stood with his arms crossed. He had stopped arguing. Daniel saw him watching the widening separation in the rubber and couldn’t tell whether the man was seeing the injury or calculating what it would cost him.
The first section finally parted.
Poppy sagged against her mother. Daniel bent his knees instinctively, then remembered Beth’s warning and stepped clear of the calf’s feet. Ruth moved closer, allowing Poppy to rest against her side while the team changed positions.
“We’ve got one opening,” Beth said. Her voice had grown rough. “We need the other.”
Abby stood with a hand over her mouth, the damp ends of the blue cotton strip stuck to her wrist. When Daniel looked her way, she lowered her hand long enough to say Poppy’s name. Then she said it again.
The remaining cut took longer. Here the tire lay hard against the deepest injury, leaving almost no room for equipment. Beth tried one tool, rejected it, and asked for another. Each change meant another careful adjustment and more time standing in the heat.
Poppy’s hold on Daniel loosened. Her trunk slid from his arm and hung low, nearly touching the ground. The breaths under his palm grew quicker and less complete.
The technician monitoring her looked up. “Beth.”
“I’m watching.”
One of Poppy’s knees bent. Daniel saw the other follow and stepped back, helpless to do the thing his body wanted to do. Before the calf went down, Ruth curved her trunk beneath her chin and raised it slightly.
Poppy lifted her head. Her legs straightened enough to hold.
Beth stayed bent over the tire while the last reinforcement gave way. Then she and the technician separated the cut sections, working them outward with care until nothing remained around the calf’s body. They lowered the pieces onto the bare ground beside their knees.
Daniel looked at the place where the rubber had been. The damaged skin formed an uneven band around Poppy’s middle, swollen in places and marked by old injuries that had never been allowed to heal properly. Without the tire covering it, the full extent was visible for the first time.
Abby turned away. Daniel couldn’t.
Poppy’s next breath moved her sides farther than the one before it. She paused, took another, and expanded into the space the team had finally given her. Ruth briefly explored the exposed band, then drew her trunk away.
Beth was already asking for fluids and wound-care supplies. The technicians moved back into place, and Daniel stepped aside to give them room. His hands shook now that nothing required them to be steady.
They rinsed the injury in careful sections. Beth checked Poppy again, gave the medication she needed, and supervised the placement of a fluid line. All the while, the calf stayed against her mother, trembling through the work but remaining upright.
Daniel glanced down at the discarded rubber. He tried to imagine the photograph he would take when they were done, a calf standing beside the thing that no longer held her. For the first time since arriving, he allowed himself to think beyond the next few minutes.
Poppy’s forelegs folded. Her knees hit the dirt, and her head sank after them. Ruth’s cry brought Daniel forward before he could think. Beth was there first, crouching against the calf’s shoulder with her stethoscope pressed in place. She listened, moved it, and listened again. “Her pulse is dropping. I need that fluid running now…”
