A Rescuer Reached for a Second Water Bottle. Then the Girl Beside Him Caught His Arm.

Part 4

The bottom of the damaged post wedged against a pine stump. The panel stopped at an angle, trembling above the grass.

Vivian eased backward. Everyone nearest Nell followed her lead.

“Clear a little room around the calf,” she said. “Let her mother see her.”

The deputy had started toward the broken section. Vivian shook her head, and he stopped.

“I’d feel better if we could explain all this to her,” he muttered.

“Your best explanation is backing up,” Vivian said.

He obeyed with a small, grim nod.

Ada tested the air with her trunk. Nell leaned toward her, trying to move closer, then stopped when the tire pressed against her body. Daniel took a step away to give Vivian room, and Nell immediately followed.

“Stay by her head,” the veterinarian told him. “She’s settling when you’re there.”

He moved back. The calf let her trunk drift against his arm.

Vivian administered medication cautiously, then waited, watching Nell’s feet as closely as her eyes. She added local pain relief where she could work safely. The calf remained upright, blinking more slowly, her trunk resting near Daniel’s hand.

“If she leans, don’t shove against her,” Vivian said. “And if she starts going down, get clear.”

Daniel nodded.

“I mean it. You can’t catch an elephant.”

“I know.” He said it too quickly. Vivian held his gaze another moment before returning to the tire.

They began by making space. One technician worked loose the dry material at the outer edge while the other irrigated and passed small instruments to Vivian. Daniel watched crumbs of clay fall onto a clean pad spread on the ground. Beneath them came damp, decomposing grass and an odor that made him breathe through his mouth.

Nell jerked at a touch.

Daniel kept his palm against the side of her face. “I’m right here. Nobody’s going to rush you.”

Tessa went out through the service gate and returned with a water bucket and hay gathered against her chest. Voss called something sharp from beside his pickup. The deputy walked between him and the entrance without answering.

The girl set down the bucket near the divider. Ada extended her trunk through the opening and touched the knot of green cloth at Tessa’s wrist.

Tessa went still. Her face changed before she managed to speak.

“She remembers me.”

Vivian glanced up. “Let them hear your voice. You’re familiar.”

Tessa looked uncertainly from the mother to the calf.

“Just talk,” Daniel said. “Like when you bring their feed.”

She began with Nell’s name. At first her words were barely audible over the insects. Then she told Ada that the people were taking the rubber off, that the tools had to get close, that Nell was going with her when they left.

“Nobody’s making you stay behind,” she said. “You hear me? Both of you.”

Ada’s ears relaxed slightly. When a technician touched the tire again, Nell held her position.

Daniel kept his eyes on the calf while Tessa continued. She repeated ordinary phrases, the same ones she must have used with buckets in her hands on dark winter mornings. The girl’s voice grew steadier as she spoke.

Nearly twenty minutes passed before Vivian could place her fingers beneath part of the rubber. Sweat had soaked the back of her shirt. She tested the tire with a gentle lifting motion while a technician watched the skin beneath it.

Nell cried out before Vivian could lift the rubber clear. Ada’s answering blow sent the panel shuddering against the stump, and Daniel felt the calf’s trunk close around his wrist.

Vivian released the tire immediately.

“No more lifting. Hands off until she settles.”

Daniel stood with his wrist held against the calf’s face. He could feel each quick breath. Nell’s grip was light, but he did not test it by pulling away.

Vivian got lower and looked into the gap they had cleared. One technician aimed a light for her.

“Damaged reinforcing wire,” she said. “It’s turned into the tissue. Sliding this off will tear her.”

The technician looked toward the equipment trailer.

Vivian nodded before he asked. “Bring the cutting equipment and the guards. We’ll have to divide it.”

He stood slowly. Tessa stopped talking for a second, then began again.

Daniel had imagined the tire being eased over the calf’s head or legs once they freed it from the accumulated dirt. Now he watched the technician return with a saw case, and he had to loosen his jaw before he could speak.

“How are we keeping that away from her skin?”

“We make a protected space behind each cut. Slowly.” Vivian looked him in the eye. “But she cannot twist while the blade is moving. If she moves, we stop.”

Ada’s trunk lifted. Her attention followed the unopened case as the technician set it down.

“And if her mother comes through?” Daniel asked.

Vivian studied the divider. “Then every one of us needs to stay out of her path.”

The answer did not comfort him. He appreciated that she had not tried to.

The team arranged the protective guards, checking their position more than once. Nell’s breathing had slowed, though she still shifted whenever pressure reached the deepest part of the groove. Vivian waited through each movement.

Tessa approached the divider with her empty palms visible. She stopped well short of Ada’s face.

“Ada, we’ve got to do this,” she said. “Please stay with her.”

The mother reached through the opening. Her trunk passed over the tire and came to rest along Nell’s back, beyond the injured band.

Nell stopped moving.

Vivian watched for several breaths. Then she nodded to the technician.

“Try the motor. Away from the tire first.”

The saw started with a harsh burst of sound.

Nell lurched. Her rough skin scraped Daniel’s forearm as he stepped sideways, trying to give her room without abandoning his place. Ada trumpeted and pressed forward against the damaged panel.

The remaining cable tore free. Metal swung down into the grass, and Ada walked through the opening…
